Old things from the other side of the ocean.

We find them at the flea markets of Europe, starting from our home in Lisbon. We carry them back across the Atlantic in our own suitcases. We sell them on the Seacoast, each one with a tag that says where it came from.

What we bring back

Everything is chosen for the same reason: it is real, it is old, and it looks right in a house by the sea.

Small original seascapes, harbors, and fishing boats, painted by people who lived on the other shore. The frame comes with it.

The green cabbage-leaf majolica Portugal has made since 1884, plus faience and majolica from wherever we happen to be.

Tiles & paper

Antique azulejos, sea charts, engravings, and posters. Light, flat, and a few centuries older than anything at the mall.

Vesta cases, snuff boxes, salts. Hallmarked continental silver, the kind that outlives its owners.

Where it comes from

Seven in the morning, on a blanket.

Home base is Lisbon: Tuesdays and Saturdays at Feira da Ladra, plus dealers across Portugal who send a photo when something good turns up. From there we go wherever a season's worth of good things is sitting on a blanket: Porto, Seville, the brocantes of France, the markets of northern Italy.

Everything is checked for age, marks, and condition before it goes in the suitcase, and everything is bought honestly from the person who had it.

The tag

Every piece arrives with its story tied on.

  1. The route. Airport codes, from where it was found to Portsmouth. LIS → PSM for most of them.
  2. What it is. Object, maker or region when we know it, and the decade.
  3. Where we found it. The market, the town, the month.
  4. The flaw. If it has one, it's on the tag and in the photos. No surprises.
